India Accommodation Guide

Palace & Heritage Hotels

$150–$600+/night₹12,000–50,000+

India's greatest accommodation secret: converted Maharaja palaces and royal havelis now open as hotels. Properties like Taj Rambagh Palace (Jaipur), Umaid Bhawan (Jodhpur), and Neemrana Fort are among Asia's finest hotels — with prices far below comparable properties in Europe.

Best for

Honeymoons, special occasions, India first-timers who want the iconic experience

Booking tips

  • Book 4–6 weeks ahead for Oct–Feb peak season
  • Check if breakfast is included — often adds good value
  • Many offer sundowner cocktails even if you don't stay

Boutique Havelis

$40–$150/night₹3,500–12,000

Traditional merchant mansions (havelis) converted into small boutique hotels. Characterful courtyards, rooftop terraces, and family management. The sweet spot of character and value — you'll often have the place mostly to yourself.

Best for

Independent travellers wanting character without palace prices

Booking tips

  • Book directly or via hotel website — saves 15–20% vs OTAs
  • Ask for rooms facing the courtyard, not the street
  • Read recent reviews — standards vary widely

Business & 3–4 Star Hotels

$35–$100/night₹3,000–8,500

India's mid-range hotel chains (Lemon Tree, Radisson, Marriott Courtyard) offer reliable, modern rooms at prices far below Western equivalents. Clean, AC, reliable WiFi, and often include a pool. Ideal for business-standard comfort at budget prices.

Best for

Reliability seekers, business travellers, those who want predictability

Booking tips

  • OTA deals (Booking.com, MakeMyTrip) often beat walk-in rates
  • Location matters enormously in Indian cities — choose carefully
  • Taj, Oberoi, and ITC are India's premier 5-star chains

Guesthouses & Homestays

$15–$45/night₹1,300–3,800

Family-run guesthouses are where you'll find the best local knowledge, home-cooked food, and genuine hospitality. Often in character-filled old buildings. Breakfast is usually included. Common in Varanasi, Rishikesh, and Rajasthan's smaller towns.

Best for

Cultural immersion, solo travellers, longer stays

Booking tips

  • Check photos carefully — quality varies dramatically
  • Ask about noise levels: old-city guesthouses can be very loud
  • Negotiate for multi-night stays (3+ nights often gets 10–15% off)

Hostels

$6–$18/night (dorm)₹500–1,500

India's hostel scene has improved dramatically. GoStops, Zostel, and The Hosteller chains operate clean, social hostels in all major traveller cities. Private rooms in hostels are often better value than budget hotels and include social common areas.

Best for

Solo travellers, budget travellers, those wanting to meet other backpackers

Ashrams & Spiritual Retreats

$10–$80/night₹800–6,500

Unique to India: ashrams offer accommodation alongside yoga, meditation, and Ayurvedic programmes. Some require minimum stays (1–4 weeks) and participation in daily activities. Rishikesh is the global capital of yoga retreats.

Best for

Spiritual seekers, yoga practitioners, those wanting total digital detox

Booking tips

  • Most serious ashrams require an application — not just a booking
  • Meals are usually included (vegetarian only)
  • Kerala Ayurvedic retreats require minimum 7–14 night stays for proper treatment

Before You Book

India Booking Tips

Book Oct–Mar well ahead

Peak season (November–February) sees top havelis and heritage hotels fully booked 4–6 weeks out in Rajasthan. Jaipur during the Literature Festival (January) requires 2–3 months advance booking.

Compare OTAs vs direct

Booking.com and Expedia are often 10–20% cheaper than walking in. But booking directly (calling the hotel) can sometimes beat both — especially for boutique properties that want to save on commission.

Location is everything

Indian cities are large and traffic is heavy. A cheap hotel 10km from your sightseeing area will cost more in cab fares and time than a mid-range hotel in the right neighbourhood. Always check the map.

Check cancellation policies

During peak season, hotels often impose strict non-refundable policies. Book refundable where possible until your plans are confirmed, then switch to non-refundable for the better rate.
