How to Apply for India e-Visa

1

Visit the official portal

Go to indianvisaonline.gov.in — only use the official government site. Avoid third-party agents; they charge unnecessary fees.

Fill in the application

Enter your passport details, travel dates, and contact information. The form takes 10–15 minutes. Have a digital passport photo ready (white background, 350×350px minimum).

3

Pay the fee online

Pay by credit/debit card. The fee is non-refundable. Processing begins immediately after payment.

4

Wait 3–5 business days

You'll receive an email confirmation with your application ID. Track status at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Peak season (Oct–Mar) can add 1–2 days.

5

Print your e-Visa

Download and print the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). You must show a physical printout at Indian immigration — screenshots on a phone are not accepted at all airports.

Common Questions

Visa FAQs

Can I extend my e-Visa inside India?

No. The tourist e-Visa cannot be extended from inside India. You must exit and re-enter (on a double/multiple-entry visa) or apply for a separate long-stay visa at a Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

Which countries are eligible for an India e-Visa?

Citizens of over 160 countries can apply for an India e-Visa. Notable exceptions include Pakistan, Afghanistan, and a few others. Check the official portal for the current eligibility list.

Can I use any airport with an e-Visa?

The India e-Visa is valid at 28 designated international airports and 5 seaports. All major airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad) are included.

Is there a minimum validity left on my passport?

Yes. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in India. It must also have at least 2 blank pages for the immigration stamp.

Can I get a visa on arrival in India?

India does not offer traditional visa-on-arrival for most nationalities. The e-Visa (applied online before travel) is the closest equivalent — it's approved before you fly.
