About

India's most extraordinary erotic art — and the story behind it

Khajuraho's reputation precedes it — even people who have never heard of the Chandela Rajputs know about the erotic sculptures. But the reality is both more and less shocking than the legend: yes, some panels depict explicit sexual activity; no, this isn't the dominant theme. The 'erotic 10%' is interspersed throughout carvings of everyday medieval life: women applying makeup, musicians, hunters, and a remarkable diversity of gods in various mythological poses.

The 25 surviving temples (of 85 original) are divided into three geographical groups across the town. The Western Group — containing the largest and most ornate temples including the Kandariya Mahadeva — is by far the most impressive and is included in the main ticket. The Eastern Group includes both Hindu and Jain temples; the Jain temples are remarkable for their pristine white marble interiors. The Southern Group contains two isolated temples worth the walk for dedicated visitors.

What makes Khajuraho unique beyond the erotic imagery is the astonishing quality of the stone carving throughout. The temples were built in a single creative century (950–1050 CE) by the Chandela Rajputs as an expression of both religious devotion and royal prestige. The stone used is a warm sandstone that glows golden in afternoon light — the best time to photograph the carvings is the hour before sunset, when the low light throws the relief sculpture into extraordinary three-dimensional definition. The nightly Light & Sound Show (8 pm, ₹250) is worth attending for the context it provides.
