About Keoladeo National Park
Keoladeo National Park — popularly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary — is an ornithological wonder compressed into just 29 square kilometres. A former duck-hunting reserve of the Maharajas of Bharatpur (British viceroys shot tens of thousands of birds here at a single shoot), it was protected as a bird sanctuary in 1956 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
The park's combination of seasonally flooded marshland, dry woodland, and grassland creates an exceptional diversity of habitats that supports over 370 species. From October to March, the winter migrants arrive in extraordinary numbers: bar-headed geese from Central Asia, northern pintails, shovellers, teals, and the star attraction — the critically endangered Siberian crane, which once arrived in flocks of hundreds but now numbers in single figures due to habitat loss along its migration route. Every Siberian crane sighting here makes international birding news.
Year-round, the park's breeding colonies are spectacular: painted storks, open-billed storks, darters, spoonbills, cormorants, and several heron species nest in a single grove of trees, creating a cacophony of colour and sound visible from hundreds of metres away. Python sightings on the grassland paths are frequent; sambar and nilgai graze unperturbed near the main path.
The standard way to visit is by cycle-rickshaw, hired at the gate — the licensed rickshaw-wallahs double as informal guides and know exactly where every species is nesting. Cyclists and walkers are equally welcome on the main paths. The park is compact enough to cover in a half-day, making it perfect as a stop on the Golden Triangle (Agra is 55 km away) or as a standalone day trip from Delhi (4 hrs).
Insider Tips
- ›Hire a cycle-rickshaw at the gate — the pullers know every nest and are superb informal guides
- ›The main path to Python Point (6 km out and back) covers the main colonies, marsh, and grassland
- ›November–January for wintering migrants; August–September for breeding storks and herons
- ›Arrive at 7 AM when the park opens for the most active bird behaviour and lowest visitor numbers
- ›Keoladeo works perfectly as a half-day add-on when visiting Agra (55 km, 1 hr drive)
