About Gir National Park
Gir National Park in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat holds a conservation record unmatched anywhere in the world: the complete recovery of the Asiatic lion from near-extinction to a thriving population of over 700. When the last census was done in 1913, a mere 20 lions survived in what is now the park; the combination of strict protection, community involvement, and the enlightened patronage of the local Nawabs saved the species from extinction.
The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) is smaller than its African cousin, with a less prominent mane and a distinctive fold of abdominal skin that hangs loosely on the males. Behaviorally, Gir's lions are unique: they live in smaller prides (often just a female and her cubs), share territory with leopards without significant conflict, and — remarkably — have extended their range beyond the park boundary into human-settled farmland, where they have developed a peaceful coexistence with the Maldhari pastoralists who have lived here for centuries.
Safaris at Gir operate on a strict government permit system managed through the Gir e-Permit website. Entry to the Gir Jungle Trail (the core zone safari) requires advance booking; day permits sell out weeks ahead during peak season. The safari format is a 3-hour jeep drive along forest tracks with a mandatory government guide — lion sightings on a morning drive are remarkably consistent, with groups of three to five lions commonly seen resting under teak trees or drinking from seasonal streams.
The best base is the town of Sasan Gir, 10 km from the main gate, which has grown into a proper wildlife tourism hub with mid-range lodges and a few excellent heritage properties. The Gujarat government has invested heavily in visitor infrastructure, making Gir one of India's most smoothly run wildlife tourism experiences.
